UniStep’s highly regarded Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation course is recognised as a high-quality academic pathway and is facilitated by industry recognised, expert teaching staff.

Learners will develop a broad range of skills relevant to tertiary education including advanced literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills, time management, problem solving, mathematics, research and assignment writing skills, exam strategies and seminar presentation skills. Additional academic specialisations such as advanced mathematics, legal studies, chemistry or physics are provided as electives.

Pathway from Foundation

Students who have successfully completed the UOP Foundation Programme will enjoy substantial academic credit into the Certificate IV via recognition of prior learning. UOP Foundation Programme graduates will be required to undertake and pass one additional subject – Research Project – to qualify for the official Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation.

Student Centred Outcomes

On completion of the Cert IV, graduates will hold stronger academic credentials when applying for entry into universities or other tertiary and higher education institutions, usually with one to two semesters of academic advance standing, and in some cases where special arrangements are in place, even greater academic credit may be available. Importantly, through this program, students will also acquire the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed in their higher education studies and enjoy the confidence that comes with being well prepared for the cultural, academic and linguistic challenges of undertaking university studies abroad.

Formative Assessments:

Formative assessments are designed to monitor student learning and provide ongoing
feedback. These assessments help students identify their strengths and weaknesses
and target areas that need improvement. The primary goal of formative assessments is
to support learning and help students develop their skills and knowledge throughout the
course. Examples of formative assessments include quizzes, drafts, peer reviews, and
practice exercises.

Summative Assessments:

Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of an
instructional unit by comparing it against a standard or benchmark. These assessments
are typically more comprehensive and are used to determine whether students have
achieved the learning objectives of the course. The primary goal of summative
assessments is to measure the extent of student learning and to assign grades.
Examples of summative assessments include final exams, end-of-term projects,
research papers, and presentations.

Both formative and summative assessments are crucial in providing a well-rounded
evaluation of student progress and ensuring that students are fully prepared for their
future studies.

Academic Grading

The Certificate IV program uses a combination of the vocational training standard “Competent” grade and the higher education standard 7-point GPA system. Grades for each course are determined based on the weighted scores of formative and summative assignments.

The overall GPA is calculated from the grades of all completed courses. This grading system facilitates a more straightforward assessment and selection process for Australian universities, ensuring that students are evaluated according to the same standards used in higher education institutions in Australia. To be deemed “Competent” a student must receive a score of no less than 4 in each unit of competency.

Completion

To successfully graduate from the Cert IV program, students must complete all assignments and achieve competency in each Unit. Upon meeting these requirements, students will graduate and receive a Graduation Certificate and formal Statement of Attainment.
