Health, Safety & Environment Policy

1. Purpose

At UniStep International, your health, safety, and well-being are our top priorities. This Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Policy outlines how we create a safe and healthy learning environment for all students, including both Australian and international students. We are committed to complying with all relevant Australian laws and regulations to ensure a secure and supportive campus.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all students, staff, and visitors at UniStep International. It covers all activities on campus, online learning environments, and any off-campus events related to your studies.

3. Policy Statement

UniStep International is dedicated to:

  • Providing a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for all students and staff, in compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) and relevant state-based WHS legislation.
  • Promoting environmental sustainability and responsible resource use on campus.
  • Ensuring that all safety practices align with the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 (Clause 8.5) and the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018 (Standard 6).
  • Offering clear information and training on health, safety, and environmental issues to help everyone understand their responsibilities.
  • Protecting your rights under Australian consumer laws, including the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), which ensures your health and safety are prioritized.

4. Health and Safety Responsibilities

  • Students: You are responsible for following all safety guidelines, reporting any hazards or unsafe practices, and taking care of your own health and safety as well as that of others. This includes adhering to emergency procedures and participating in any safety training provided.
  • Faculty and Staff: Our teachers and staff are responsible for creating a safe learning environment, ensuring that health and safety policies are followed, and providing guidance and support to students. This includes complying with Clause 8.5 of the Standards for RTOs 2015.
  • Health and Safety Officer: This person is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the HSE policy, managing reports of safety concerns, and ensuring that all health and safety regulations are met.

5. Health and Safety Practices

  • Safe Learning Spaces: We ensure that all classrooms, labs, and online learning environments are safe and free from hazards. This includes regular safety inspections and maintenance.
  • Emergency Procedures: Clear procedures are in place for emergencies such as fires, medical incidents, or natural disasters. These procedures are communicated to all students and staff and are regularly practiced through drills.
  • Mental Health Support: We provide resources and support for mental health, including counseling services and stress management programs, in line with Standard 6 of the National Code 2018.
  • Incident Reporting: Any accidents, injuries, or unsafe practices must be reported immediately to the Health and Safety Officer, who will take appropriate action.

6. Environmental Responsibility

  • Sustainable Practices: UniStep International is committed to reducing our environmental footprint through energy conservation, recycling programs, and promoting sustainable practices across campus.
  • Awareness and Education: We offer information and training on environmental sustainability, encouraging students and staff to adopt eco-friendly habits both on and off campus.
  • Compliance: Our environmental practices comply with relevant Australian environmental laws and regulations, and we continuously work to improve our sustainability efforts.

7. Training and Awareness

  • UniStep International provides regular health, safety, and environmental training for students and staff. This includes information on safe work practices, emergency procedures, and environmental sustainability.
  • Safety information is also provided during orientation and through online resources to ensure everyone is informed and prepared.

8. Review and Continuous Improvement

  • This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed to ensure it remains up-to-date with current laws and best practices. Feedback from students, staff, and external audits will be used to continuously improve our health, safety, and environmental practices, in alignment with Clause 2.2 of the Standards for RTOs 2015.

9. Compliance and Enforcement

  • UniStep International ensures compliance with this policy and all relevant Australian laws, including the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, Australian Consumer Law (ACL), ASQA, and CRICOS standards. Non-compliance will be addressed promptly, and appropriate corrective actions will be taken.
